To create a flatlock seam, the factory places the edges of two neoprene panels side-by-side. The edges overlap slightly. The sewing machine uses multiple needles and threads to stitch across the overlap.

The needles punch completely through both pieces of rubber. The thread wraps tightly over the top and bottom of the seam.

Frequently Asked Questions for Designers and Buyers

Can I use a flatlock seam on a thick winter wetsuit?
No. It is a major design flaw. Flatlock machines struggle to sew rubber that is thicker than three millimeters. More importantly, a winter wetsuit requires absolute thermal retention. Flatlock seams poke thousands of holes in the suit. Freezing water will rush in and your customer will suffer from hypothermia.

Is a blind stitch stronger than a flatlock stitch?
