The Science of Stealth: How Water Kills Color

To design good camouflage, you must understand the ocean.

When sunlight hits the ocean, the water acts like a massive blue filter. Water absorbs different colors at different depths.

Red light disappears very quickly. At just five meters deep, red looks dark brown or black. Orange and yellow disappear next. By the time a spearfisher reaches twenty meters, everything looks blue and green.

If you buy cheap camouflage fabric from a middleman, they use standard clothing dyes. They print the fabric to look good in a brightly lit retail store. They use cheap red and yellow inks to make brown patterns.

When your diver goes deep, those cheap inks fail to reflect light properly. The camouflage contrast disappears. The suit turns into a giant, solid dark blob. Fish are highly sensitive to contrast. They easily spot the solid dark shape moving against the reef.

If a supplier uses cheap, thin fabric and poor printing methods, the fabric fibers do not absorb enough ink. The ink only sits on the very top surface.

When the diver stretches the wetsuit, the fabric threads pull apart. The white rubber or the white unprinted base of the fabric becomes visible between the threads. Your beautiful dark camouflage suddenly turns pale and white.

The Engine of the Suit: Pure CR Open-Cell Rubber

Printing the perfect camo is only the outside of the suit. The inside of the suit is what keeps the diver alive.

Spearfishers spend hours in freezing water. They cannot wear normal wetsuits. Standard wetsuits have a fabric lining on the inside. That fabric traps a layer of cold water against the skin.

Spearfishers demand open-cell neoprene.

To create open-cell material, our factory takes a massive, baked block of pure rubber sponge. We use a digital slicing machine to cut straight through the middle of the block.

This cuts millions of microscopic nitrogen gas bubbles in half. We leave this sliced rubber completely raw. We do not glue any fabric to the inside.

When the diver puts the suit on, those millions of cut-open bubbles act like microscopic suction cups. They stick directly to the diver's bare skin. This creates a total vacuum seal. Cold water cannot enter the suit. The diver stays incredibly warm.

However, open-cell rubber is highly fragile. Because there is no inner fabric to protect it, human fingernails can easily tear the rubber.

You must use the highest quality rubber available.

If a trading company sells you cheap Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), the open-cell surface will rip to shreds the very first time the diver tries to put it on. SBR has zero tear resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions for Spearfishing Gear Designers

Can I print camouflage directly onto the bare rubber?
No. You cannot use dye-sublimation on bare rubber. Dye-sublimation requires polyester fabric fibers to bond correctly under high heat. If you want high-resolution, multi-colored camouflage that will not rub off on the reef, you must laminate the rubber core with a premium polyester-spandex blend fabric.

Why does open-cell rubber need soapy water to put on?
Open-cell rubber acts like millions of tiny suction cups. If the diver’s skin is dry, the rubber will stick aggressively. The friction will stop the suit from sliding on, and pulling hard will tear the rubber. Divers must use a mild, water-based lubricant or soapy water. The water makes the rubber slippery. Once the suit is in place, the water is pushed out, and the vacuum seal locks the suit to the skin.

Does a thicker fabric lining make the camo print look better?
No. A very thick fabric will actually hold too much water and make the suit heavy. The key to a great print is the tightness of the weave, not the thickness. How do you package open-cell sheets so the raw rubber does not stick together?

Can I order smooth-skin on the outside and open-cell on the inside?
Yes. This is the ultimate configuration for competitive freediving. It provides absolute wind-blocking hydrodynamics on the exterior and a perfectly watertight vacuum seal on the interior. However, because this sheet lacks any fabric lining to support it, you cannot print camouflage on it. It will be solid black or metallic. It is also the most fragile material in the industry and must be handled with extreme care.
