But because there is no fabric on the outside, there is no skeleton. The rubber is naked and vulnerable.
Many brands want to sell smoothskin suits. They hire a cheap factory to make them.

When a factory sews a wetsuit, they use needles. Needles punch holes in the material.
If you punch a hole in fabric-lined neoprene, the strong fabric threads hold the hole together.
