Hydrophilic means "water-loving." A hydrophilic fabric absorbs water. It sucks moisture deep into its fibers. A cotton t-shirt is highly hydrophilic.

Hydrophobic means "water-fearing." A hydrophobic fabric repels water. It pushes moisture away. The water beads up and rolls off the surface.

When you order a sheet of custom neoprene, the black rubber core in the middle is completely waterproof. Water cannot pass through solid rubber. However, the fabric glued to the outside and inside of the rubber can hold water.

If you choose a hydrophilic fabric for your wetsuit lining, it will act like a kitchen sponge. It will hold massive amounts of ocean water. It will become incredibly heavy. It will take a very long time to dry.

Nylon: The Tough, Water-Loving Sponge

Nylon is the absolute standard fabric in the wetsuit industry. Most generic trading companies will automatically sell you nylon unless you specify otherwise.

Nylon is an incredible fiber. It is famously tough. It has massive mechanical strength. It resists abrasion. When a surfer rubs their knees on a fiberglass board, nylon fights back. It does not tear easily. It also feels incredibly silky and soft against bare skin.

However, nylon has a fatal flaw in the water.

Nylon is highly hydrophilic.

At the molecular level, nylon fibers absorb water. When you dunk a nylon-lined wetsuit in the ocean, the fabric drinks the water. The water sinks deep into the chemical structure of the nylon threads.

Because the water is trapped inside the actual fibers, it takes a massive amount of time to evaporate. This is why a standard nylon wetsuit takes two or three days to dry in a cold garage.

If you use nylon on the inside of a winter wetsuit, your customer will almost certainly have to put on a wet, cold suit the next morning.


Polyester: The Quick-Dry, Hydrophobic Shield

If you want a fast-drying suit, you must switch your materials. You must use Polyester.

Polyester is a synthetic polymer. It behaves very differently than nylon.

Polyester is highly hydrophobic.

At the chemical level, polyester fibers hate water. They are essentially microscopic plastic threads. They refuse to absorb moisture. When you dunk a polyester-lined wetsuit in the ocean, the water sits entirely on the outside of the threads. The water never penetrates the actual fibers.

Because the water is only resting on the surface, it drips away very fast. Gravity pulls the water down and out of the suit. The remaining moisture evaporates rapidly in the breeze.

A polyester lining can dry in a fraction of the time it takes a nylon lining to dry. Your customer can surf on Saturday morning, hang the suit in the shade, and put on a dry, comfortable suit on Sunday morning.

Polyester has another massive advantage. Because it repels water, it stays incredibly lightweight during a surfing session. The athlete does not have to carry extra pounds of heavy water weight while they paddle.

Will a polyester lining feel rougher against the skin than nylon?
Standard polyester does have a slightly crisper, more textured feel compared to the silky smoothness of premium nylon. However, textile technology has advanced massively.
