You ordered a premium CR (Chloroprene Rubber) neoprene sheet, but the sample you received feels suspiciously stiff and cheap. Is it really CR, or did your supplier substitute a lower-grade SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) to cut costs?
This is a common and costly problem in the industry. A dishonest supplier can easily misrepresent the material, and unless you have access to a sophisticated lab, it can be difficult to tell the difference.
But don't worry. There are several simple visual and physical tests you can perform yourself to get a good indication of the neoprene grade.

Before we begin, it's important to state that these tests are not foolproof. They provide a good indication, but the only way to be 100% certain of the material composition is through laboratory analysis.
However, these simple tests can help you identify obvious red flags and give you the confidence to challenge a supplier if you suspect foul play.
This is the easiest first step. Simply look closely at the cut edge of the neoprene sheet.
CR Neoprene: The foam will have a very dense, uniform, and almost perfectly round closed-cell structure. The cells will be tightly packed together, creating a smooth, consistent surface.
SBR Neoprene: The foam will have a visibly larger, irregular, and less dense cell structure. The cells will be more spaced out and less uniform, creating a slightly rougher surface.
Think of it like comparing a high-quality sponge to a cheap, porous foam. The difference is often visible to the naked eye.
This test evaluates the material's flexibility and its ability to return to its original shape after being stretched (its "memory").
Grab a section of the neoprene sheet and stretch it firmly.
Observe how easily it stretches. CR will stretch much further and with less resistance than SBR.
Release the material and observe how quickly it returns to its original shape. CR will snap back almost instantly. SBR will return more slowly and may show some permanent deformation.
CR Neoprene: Stretches easily and returns to its original shape almost instantly.
SBR Neoprene: Requires more force to stretch and returns to its original shape slowly, often with some visible distortion.
This test simulates the stress that a wetsuit knee pad would experience during use.
Fold a section of the neoprene sheet sharply, as if you were bending your knee.
Hold it in this position for 30 seconds.
Release the fold and observe how quickly the material returns to its original shape.
CR Neoprene: Will spring back almost completely, with minimal creasing.
SBR Neoprene: Will show a noticeable crease or fold mark that remains visible for some time.
This demonstrates CR's superior "compression set" resistance.
This test is subjective, but it can be a useful indicator.
CR Neoprene: Has a mild, slightly sweet, and rubbery scent that is not overpowering.
SBR Neoprene: Often has a stronger, more chemical, and sometimes unpleasant odor.
This is due to the different chemical compounds used in the manufacturing process.
Warning: This test involves fire and should only be performed by experienced individuals in a safe, controlled environment.
Cut a very small sliver of the neoprene and hold it with tongs.
Carefully apply a flame to the edge of the material.
Observe how it burns and the smell it produces.
CR Neoprene: Burns slowly and self-extinguishes when the flame is removed. It produces a slightly acrid, chlorine-like smell.
SBR Neoprene: Burns more readily and continues to burn after the flame is removed. It produces a more rubbery, petroleum-like smell.
Important Note: This test is destructive and should be performed only as a last resort.
These simple tests can provide valuable insights, but they are not a substitute for working with a reputable and transparent manufacturer.
