The Hot Car and the Broken Wetsuit

Imagine a dedicated surfer buying your brand’s top-tier winter wetsuit. They pay a premium price. The suit features Glued and Blind Stitched (GBS) seams.

They surf all morning in freezing water. The suit performs perfectly. They stay completely dry.

Understanding GBS: Why the Glue is Everything

To understand why a wetsuit fails, you must understand how GBS works.

GBS stands for Glued and Blind Stitched.

First, the factory paints glue onto the edges of the neoprene. They press the edges together.
Second, a curved needle sews the top of the fabric. The needle only goes halfway into the rubber. It never pokes a hole through to the inside.

Because the needle only goes halfway, the thread does not hold the entire suit together. The thread just holds the top layer.

The glue does the heavy lifting. The glue is the true structural skeleton of the wetsuit.

If the glue fails, the seam splits. The blind-stitch thread will simply rip out of the soft rubber.

Failure Mode 1: Heat Degradation

Heat is the ultimate enemy of cheap wetsuit glue.

Cheap factories use standard, solvent-based contact cement. This glue dries fast and costs very little.

But standard contact cement has a low melting point.

When a customer leaves a wetsuit in a hot car, or washes it in hot water, the glue reacts. It softens. It turns back into a sticky liquid.

When the surfer puts the suit on and stretches their body, the soft glue cannot hold the rubber together. The seam pulls apart instantly.

Failure Mode 2: Saltwater Degradation

The ocean is a harsh chemical environment. Saltwater destroys weak materials.

When a surfer finishes a session, saltwater soaks into the outer fabric of the seam. If they do not rinse the suit with fresh water, the water evaporates.

The salt stays behind.

Salt forms microscopic crystals. These crystals have sharp, jagged edges. They grow deep inside the seam.

When the surfer moves, these sharp salt crystals act like tiny razor blades. They grind against the glue. They cut the blind-stitch threads. Over time, the salt completely destroys the chemical bond of the adhesive.

Q1: Can my customers wash a GBS wetsuit in hot water?
No. You must always instruct customers to wash wetsuits in cold or cool fresh water. While our marine-grade glue is highly heat resistant, boiling hot water damages the neoprene rubber sponge itself and reduces its elasticity.

Q2: Should a wetsuit be dried in direct sunlight?
Never. Direct UV sunlight is the enemy of all synthetic rubber. It dries out the neoprene and makes it brittle. Wetsuits should always be hung to dry in the shade, folded over a wide hanger.

Q3: Is liquid seam taping better than internal fabric taping?
Both are excellent. Internal fabric tape adds comfort against the skin and reinforces the glue. External liquid tape provides the ultimate shield against saltwater and abrasion. For high-end winter suits, we often use both methods on the same seam.
