If you are designing gear for cold water, you cannot use basic flatlock stitching. Flatlock sewing punches thousands of holes straight through the rubber. Water will flow right through it.

GBS is a highly advanced, two-step manufacturing process. It is the absolute industry standard for cold-water surfing and diving.
Step One: The Glue Wall
First, the factory applies a strong, waterproof adhesive to the raw cut edges of the neoprene panels. They push the edges together firmly. This glue creates a solid, watertight rubber wall between the two pieces.
Step Two: The Blind Stitch
Next, the factory sews the panels together using a specialized blind-stitching machine. This machine uses a curved needle. The needle goes into the top of the rubber, travels exactly halfway through the sponge core, and comes back out on the same side.
The needle never pokes a hole through the bottom layer of the rubber. Because there is no hole, there is no path for water to enter.
The Verdict on GBS
A properly executed GBS seam is one hundred percent watertight. It is highly flexible. It moves effortlessly with the athlete's body. It locks the warm body heat inside the suit.
However, GBS has one small vulnerability. The sewing thread is exposed on the outside of the suit. Over time, aggressive surfing, salty water, and sticky surfboard wax can wear down that outer thread. If the thread breaks after a year of heavy abuse, the seam might slowly start to leak.
If you want to build a product that is virtually indestructible, you must upgrade to Liquid Taped seams.
Liquid taping takes a standard GBS seam and turns it into armor.
How Liquid Taping Works
After the factory finishes the standard GBS process, they place the wetsuit on a special machine. A technician uses a nozzle to pour a thick bead of liquid urethane rubber directly over the outside of the seam.
This liquid rubber cures into a solid, highly flexible seal. It completely covers the gap between the panels. Most importantly, it completely buries the sewing thread.
The Unbreakable Barrier
Because the thread is buried under liquid rubber, it can never catch on a sharp rock. It will never rub against a surfboard. The thread is perfectly protected from the environment.
The liquid tape acts as an impenetrable shield. It totally blocks freezing water. It completely deflects harsh winter winds. It provides the absolute highest level of thermal protection possible in a wetsuit.
You do not need liquid tape for every single product. Liquid taping is a slow, expensive manufacturing process. You must balance your production costs with your target retail price.

When to Use Standard GBS

Can I put liquid tape over a basic flatlock seam?
No. This is a very common beginner mistake. A flatlock seam punches thousands of holes entirely through the rubber. Liquid tape only sits on the surface. It cannot fill all those deep holes. Water will still find a way inside. Liquid tape must only be applied over a GBS seam.
Does liquid tape make the wetsuit feel stiffer?
Yes, slightly. You are adding a thick layer of solid urethane rubber over the joint. This naturally restricts some of the stretch. This is why we recommend using liquid tape strategically on the legs and torso, while leaving the shoulder panels as standard GBS to maintain paddling mobility.
How do you stop the inside of the seam from itching the skin?
The blind stitch is on the inside of the garment. Sometimes the thick thread can chafe bare skin. Can I get liquid taped seams in custom colors?
